Why Dry-stone wall?
The tradition of dry-stone construction
Dry-stone construction is a traditional building method in which natural stone pieces are stacked one upon another without the use of mortar or other binding materials. The stability of the structure is achieved by careful selection, fitting and arrangement of stones. This method of construction has shaped the Dalmatian landscape for centuries, with dry-stone walls used to delineate land, create agricultural terraces, and adapt the rocky terrain to various needs. Dry-stone structures are built using stone pieces of various shapes and sizes, with the method of arrangement being crucial to the stability and final appearance of the structure. Today, dry-stone walls play an important role in preserving the traditional landscape, but they are also used in the landscaping of gardens, grounds, and rural properties. The art of dry-stone construction has been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
